Podium finish in the QS Sustainability Rankings HU
Â鶹´«Ă˝ has achieved third place in Hungary and ranked 377th among the 2,000 institutions in the international field.

Responding to the growing importance of environmental protection, after the Times Higher Education, in 2022 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) also launched its own university world ranking based on sustainability criteria (Sustainability Rankings). The indicators used by QS are again divided into three major groups: the measurement of environmental impact (education, research, sustainability aspects), the measurement of social impact (employability, equality, health and well-being, educational impact, knowledge transfer), and the category examining university governance. A detailed English-language summary of the methodology can be found .

The ranking now lists the world’s 2,001 best higher education institutions, up from the previous 700, 1,400, and then 1,743. Of these, 620 are from Europe and 14 from Hungary. Â鶹´«Ă˝ achieved 377th place in the overall ranking, thus remaining third among Hungarian institutions, following the University of Debrecen (322nd) and the University of Szeged (338th). In Europe, ELTE ranks 170th.

Among the three evaluated areas, ELTE achieved its best result in university governance, ranking 171st. It placed 486th in environmental impact and 406th in social impact.

ELTE holds first place among Hungarian universities in the fields of university governance and social impact,

and third in terms of environmental impact.

ELTE believes that global solutions are needed for the global problem of climate change, but it is also essential for countries and smaller organizations, including universities, to concentrate their efforts in this direction. Sustainability is one of the focal points of the university’s strategy, and sustainability education is part of the faculties’ training portfolios. ELTE strongly supports research related to environmental protection and sustainability and is a founding member of the CHARM-EU European university alliance, whose first master’s program is titled â€śGlobal Challenges of Sustainability.”

The 2026 QS Sustainability Rankings are led by Lund University in Sweden, followed by the University of Toronto and University College London (UCL).
