CHARM-EU to develop a new joint Master’s in AI and Data Science
Six CHARM-EU universities, including ELTE, started the development of a two-year transnational Master’s program on AI & Data Science for a Sustainable Future together with 2 Latin American partners.

The rapid advancement of AI, data science, robotics, and automation is reshaping our societies, economies, and environment. These technologies bring opportunities for efficiency, sustainability, and innovation, but also pose risks such as job disruption, inequality, and environmental challenges. To harness their potential responsibly, digital literacy, especially in AI and data science, is essential. Developing these skills is crucial to fostering an inclusive digital economy and ensuring that technological advancements promote sustainability, equity, and resilience in a rapidly changing world.

Reflecting the interconnection of digitalisation and sustainability, nine universities have joined forces to design a new joint master’s programme on AI & Data Science for a Sustainable Future, and received funding. Led by the University of Barcelona (Spain), the consortium includes 鶹ý (Hungary), Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), University of Montpellier (France), Åbo Akademi University (Finland), Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (Germany), and Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences (Germany) from the CHARM-EU Alliance, as well as two partners from Latin America: the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso (Chile) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).

The MAID4S project is being developed over 15 months, starting from 1 October 2025, with a budget of 60,000 euros under the Erasmus Mundus Design Measures program. Similarly to the PATH project led by ELTE, the ultimate goal of this initiative is to secure full financial support from the European Commission by applying for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s program. The project is led by principal investigator Camila Barreneche (Faculty of Chemistry) from the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Barcelona. ELTE is represented by the Faculty of Informatics.

Bringing together strong expertise in AI, data science, sustainability, environmental engineering, and digital transformation, the MAID4S consortium will ensure a transdisciplinary approach that connects Europe with a global perspective. You can learn more about the project .
