Balancing Books & Bills: My Part-Time Work Life as an ELTE Student
Why Work? More Than Just Money
Yes, the primary goal was financial stability. Working in a Thai restaurant as a chef and later in a Korean restaurant as a waiter gave me the independence to fund my studies and life in Budapest. However, the bigger reward was the structure it added to my life. Having a work schedule forced me to organize my time efficiently, making me a more disciplined student.
How I Managed Studies with Work
Juggling lectures and shifts is challenging but possible. Here’s what worked for me:
- Schedule Everything: I treated my study time like a work shift. Using a planner, I blocked out specific hours for classes, library sessions, work, and most importantly, rest.
- Communicate Openly: I always informed my managers about my exam periods and important deadlines at ELTE. They were understanding and flexible.
- Find a Job That Fits: Look for roles with shifts that complement your class timetable, not conflict with them.
The Icing on the Cake: Cultural & Personal Growth
My jobs became my gateway to understanding Budapest beyond the classroom. At the Korean restaurant, I didn’t just serve food; I learned about Korean culture and built a second family with my colleagues. Working in a Hungarian kitchen taught me about local work ethics and cuisine.
These experiences didn’t take away from my studies; they enriched them. They provided a mental break from academics and helped me develop real-world skills like teamwork and communication.
What ’m Doing Now
These days, I focus more on my studies and practical data science projects, but I still carry out the lessons learned from my part-time jobs. The time management, adaptability, and communication skills I gained continue to help me balance my academic and personal life effectively.

If you’re an international student considering a part-time job, I highly recommend it. It’s a powerful way to gain independence, manage your finances, and create a wonderfully balanced life during your studies at ELTE.
