Autumn through lens of Budapest: between books and adventures
Hello! My name is Elene and I study Psychology BA at ELTE. Today I have a public confession to make: I was never a big fan of the Autumn season… until I moved to Budapest, that is.

This city completely transformed my perception of the beautiful season that is upon us, which I despised solely because of chilly weather and the atmosphere of back to school, but what I once dreaded has become something I genuinely look forward to - returning to Hungary for my third year at ELTE has filled me with a warm sense of comfort.

We all know the city is buzzing with tourists all year long - and for a good reason - but if I had to recommend a season to visit Budapest, I would definitely argue that autumn is the best choice. Hands down. It’s when the city truly shines.

Nothing will ever compare to late evening walks along the city, following the riverbank and  crossing the glowing bridges, admiring gothic-style buildings and statues. Even after more than two years, I walk these streets with the very same feeling of amazement and pride. And don’t even get me started on parks - this time of year, it would be a crime to miss out on the golden sights of the leaves and sunsets.

The most perfect culmination of your autumn journey in the city full of art and history would be seizing the fascinating opportunity of visiting museums and landmarks on the day of the hungarian revolution - october 23rd - which is the time where all the doors of the city are open for you! This day holds a special sentimental importance for me, firstly, because the date is already filled with fun and meaningful days spent with my friends, but more importantly, because this day is a symbol of the resistance against the soviet rule, which is something that unites the Hungarian people and my very own nation, and a piece of history that I hold close to my heart.

Getting into the spirit of exploration might just motivate you to go beyond the streets and landmarks of Budapest and hop on the train for even more adventures during your weekends! I mean, honestly, who can resist the temptation when the coziest towns of Hungary, as well as Austrian capital Vienna are just a couple of hours away!

To completely change the course of our narrative, I just have to add that see no autumn without one of its most important elements - books! Along with a destination none of us can escape for too long - the libraries of Budapest. Getting back into study mode after the break can be tough, but frankly, you can spot the ELTE main library being overcrowded by the hardworking students. If you’re planning to go in the evening or on weekends… good luck finding a seat!

So here we are:  the weather is getting chillier, outfits are getting more stylish, pumpkin spice lattes are making their seasonal comeback, and the city’s streets full of crunchy leaves are waiting for you! Looking back, I never imagined that a season I used to dislike would become a symbol of personal growth. Autumn in Budapest has taught me to embrace change, slow down, and appreciate transitions - not just in nature, but in myself. It’s funny how a new city, new people, and new experiences can shift your perspective in ways you never expected.
